Banks to be remembered by Cubs throughout 2015

No. 14 cap, Opening Day pin and uniform patch part of season-long tribute

MESA, Ariz. -- The Cubs will wear No. 14 caps for their Spring Training opener on March 5 and a commemorative patch on their home and road uniforms all season to honor Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, who passed away in January.

The caps and patch are part of a season-long tribute to Banks, who died one week shy of his 84th birthday.

Banks will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the Cubs' regular-season opener against the Cardinals on April 5 at Wrigley Field. Each fan attending that game will receive a commemorative pin in honor of Banks.

A collection of videos, photos and articles have been posted on Cubs.com over the last several weeks, while the team's "Vine Line" magazine will publish a special feature edition honoring Mr. Cub in March.

The team said additional tributes will be finalized and incorporated throughout the 2015 season.

Mr. Cub Ernie Banks dies at 83

"There is no level of recognition that can properly acknowledge how much Ernie Banks meant to this franchise and fan base," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. "Collectively, we must ensure Mr. Cub's legacy rightfully lives on at the Friendly Confines and with future generations of baseball fans."

Banks played for 19 seasons with the Cubs. He won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1958 and '59, belted 512 home runs, and still leads the team in several offensive categories, including games played (2,528), at-bats (9,421), extra-base hits (1,009) and total bases (4,706).

He was the first Cubs player to have his number retired in 1982, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
