Petco's Green Initiative aims to reduce waste
MILWAUKEE -- The Padres weren't at home Tuesday to celebrate Earth Day at Petco Park, though the team's Green Initiative rolls on even when the team is on the road.
The Green Initiative is a comprehensive, proactive and aggressive plan to save energy and reduce waste.
Every area of Petco Park, which opened in 2004, plays a role in waste reduction through programs such as recycle sorting, food waste composting, plastic wrap and foam diversion and cooking oil recycling.
In 2013, the team exceeded their goal of a 75 percent recycling rate at Petco Park, reaching 81 percent by the end of the year.
The Padres have been named the City of San Diego's Recycler of the Year on four occasions, the last in 2013.
