Celebrating Memorial Day in Birdland

May 31, 2021

Memorial Day is a time to reflect and honor those individuals who have lost their lives serving in the U.S. Military. Year round, the Orioles are proud to serve the military community and support many local and national organizations displaying such passion for veterans, military members, and their families:

United Service Organizations (USO)

The USO’s primary mission is to continue to strengthen America’s military servicemembers by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation. They continuously adapt to the needs of the men and women in uniform and their families, so that they can focus on their important mission. Recently, the Baltimore Orioles had the privilege to work with USO and Chick-fil-A Baltimore to give back to military members and families at Fort Meade. Military members and their families were given complimentary Orioles gear, and more than 1,000 boxed meals were provided by Chick-fil-A Baltimore.

The Baltimore Station

The Baltimore Station is dedicated to turning lives around. They are an innovative therapeutic residential outpatient treatment program supporting veterans who are overcoming obstacles to regain self-sufficiency. Their programs are held with open arms to those who need their services at no cost. Recently, the Orioles’ Orange and Black Gives Back Employee Volunteer program held a toiletry drive for the residents of the Baltimore Station, collecting more than 100 personal hygiene items for veterans in need. Additionally, longtime Baltimore Station Volunteer Sarah Walsh was recognized as a Birdland Community Hero. As part of this recognition, the Orioles Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 to The Baltimore Station.

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

TAPS provides 24/7 comfort, care, and resources to all those grieving the death of a military loved one through a national peer support network and connection to grief resources, all at no cost to the surviving families and loved ones. This Memorial Day, the Orioles are running an online auction through Orioles.com/Auction to benefit TAPS. The auction will run from 5:00 p.m. on May 31 until 10:00 p.m. on June 6. Prior to Memorial Day, Orioles pitcher Adam Plutko met with a TAPS family to discuss the significance of the holiday.

The Mission Continues

The Mission Continues helps veterans with a desire to continue their service to be a part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Their goal is to continue empowering veterans, while also providing communities in need with veteran talent, skills, and preparedness to generate visible impact.

Team Red, White, & Blue (Team RWB)

Team RWB focuses on delivering virtual and local, consistent, inclusive opportunities for veterans and the community to connect through physical and social activity. The also focus on sharing their own ethos – a set of guiding belief and ideals that characterize our community: passion, people, positivity, commitment, camaraderie, and community. They live by these actions every day.
