Milwaukee Brewers visit Bruce-Guadalupe Community School

3:52 PM EDT

In the Milwaukee Brewers latest effort to go beyond the diamond, the Crew made a special visit to Bruce-Guadalupe Community School this spring. Rookie outfielder Jackson Chourio, infielder Andruw Monasterio, and assistant coach Daniel deMondesert joined students for a Q&A session moderated by Brewers broadcaster Sophia Minnaert. Players discussed overcoming challenges, support systems and role models in their own lives. Here’s the recap from a school day these students will never forget.

Screams of excitement echoed through the gym as the students were surprised by Brewers players walking into their gymnasium. Students were all ears as Chourio and Monasterio spoke about their respective journeys to the Big Leagues. Both players emphasized the massive role their families played in their success.

“Today was a great day, we had a couple members of the Brewers come visit our school and talk about the hard work they've done to get to where they are today - being professional baseball players and the support network with their families and coaches throughout the years, but also teachers playing a role,” said Santiago Navarro, principal of Bruce-Guadalupe Community School.

Additionally, Chourio and Monasterio shared their love for the Brewers culture and the club’s support system. Chourio also encouraged students to always continue chasing their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

“It makes us feel noticed, like we're here,” student Fabiola Lopez said. “We're a school full of Hispanics, so it's like, it's like a lot for us, especially having these big names representing us. It feels really nice.”

The students asked their own pressing questions for the players, such as what their jobs would be if they weren’t playing baseball. Perhaps to their surprise, Monasterio answered “surgeon” and Chourio “architect.”

Not only was it an exciting visit for the students, but also for Bruce-Guadalupe Community School teacher Ms. Devan Delaney, who received the Brewers Grand Slam Teacher of the Month Award, presented by UScellular®. This award recognizes Wisconsin educators who are difference makers in the classroom, often using innovative strategies to improve student achievement.

When Ms. Delaney received the award, her strong relationship with her students was obvious, as the entire gymnasium burst into celebration for their science teacher. Ms. Delaney’s continuous efforts to provide a positive and opportunistic environment for all students had paid off. Along with the Grand Slam Teacher of the Month Award, she also scored Brewers gear from Chourio, Monasterio and deMondesert, including a personalized jersey.

The final surprise of the day was a visit from the Johnsonville Famous Racing Sausages®. Students cheered for each of their favorite sausages as they received autographs and high fives to cap off an unforgettable school day.
