Felix sharp for three innings in Mariners' loss

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Eric Hinske and Mark Teahen hit home runs on Tuesday to lead a D-backs split-squad team to a 5-4 victory over the Mariners in Cactus League play at Peoria Stadium.

Mariners ace Felix Hernandez allowed one run -- on Hinske's home run -- while giving up just one hit in three innings in his second start of the spring.

Hinske, 35, launched his solo shot off Hernandez with one out in the second, driving a 1-0 fastball over the fence in right-center. It was Hinske's first long ball of the spring after signing a one-year deal with the D-backs.

Hernandez, who has three more scheduled starts this spring, threw 38 pitches while striking out three and walking one. He's now allowed two runs and three hits in five innings of work in Cactus League play, with his next outing expected on Sunday.

Hernandez was efficient enough that he went to the bullpen to throw another 15 pitches after he exited the game. He said his command was better than his first start last week against the Royals, his only blemish a sinker that didn't sink to Hinske.

"That was a mistake," Hernandez said. "I was trying to go in. I left it up. Arizona."

Teahen uncorked a three-run homer off Hector Noesi in the fourth inning as the Mariners right-hander continued a rough spring. Noesi walked two and gave up the home run in his one inning of work as his Cactus League ERA climbed to 17.36. And that doesn't include his worst outing, a three-homer day in his last start that was wiped out by rain.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin, who is battling Tyler Skaggs and Randall Delgado for the No. 5 spot in Arizona's rotation, gave up just one run on four hits in four innings. Corbin's longest start of the spring included two strikeouts with no walks as he threw 57 pitches.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt continued his hot start for Arizona as he went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, raising his Cactus League average to .448 (13-for-29).

Mariners prospect Brad Miller, getting the start at third base, hit a solo shot to lead off the fifth against D-backs right-hander Chase Anderson as Seattle raised its Major League-leading home run total to 32 in 17 games. Miller doubled and scored in the ninth on an error.

Up next: Hisashi Iwakuma is scheduled to throw four innings Wednesday when the Mariners travel to Surprise, Ariz., to face the Royals in a 1:05 p.m. PT game. Iwakuma threw three scoreless innings with just one hit against the Royals in his last outing on Thursday. Danny Hultzen, who hasn't pitched since Feb. 27 after his last start was scratched because of a sore hip, will throw an inning in relief. Relievers Tom Wilhelmsen, Charlie Furbush and Stephen Pryor are also scheduled to throw.
