Flu bug shakes up White Sox lineup

MINNEAPOLIS -- The White Sox have been a hit by a flu bug this weekend in Minnesota that left center fielder and leadoff man Adam Eaton unavailable for the past three days and knocked catcher Tyler Flowers from the starting lineup Sunday.

Eaton was sent home to Chicago on Saturday because he wasn't well enough to play, although he is improving and the White Sox hope to have him back for Tuesday's series opener at home against the Tigers.

"Hopefully he can go home and have the off-day too, and be ready to go Tuesday," manager Robin Ventura said about Monday. "I'm hoping. We've got a few guys that have something going around."

Adam LaRoche, who started at first base Sunday with Jose Abreu moving to designated hitter, also was bothered by the flu, according to Ventura.

• Infielder Carlos Sanchez entered Sunday's contest with Triple-A Charlotte going 9-for-9 over his past two games. He went 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, seven RBIs and three runs scored in Saturday's 10-4 victory for the Knights over Scranton Wilkes-Barre, and then went 5-for-5 Friday with two doubles. Sanchez, 22, broke camp with the White Sox and is ranked the team's No. 10 prospect, per MLB.com. He was part of the second-base battle with Micah Johnson during Spring Training.

• Jared Mitchell, the White Sox top pick and 23rd overall in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, was released by the organization Sunday per a release from Triple-A Charlotte. Outfielder Tyler Colvin was signed by the White Sox and assigned to Charlotte, taking Mitchell's roster spot.

Mitchell, 26, came from LSU as a two-sport standout and hit .296 with Class A Kannapolis during his first season in the organization. But he tore a tendon in his left ankle during a Cactus League game in 2010, costing him the entire season, and the left-handed-hitting outfielder could not find true consistency after that. Mitchell was 2-for-40 with 22 strikeouts for the Knights this season.
