Foot injury sends Lamb to disabled list

PHOENIX -- The D-backs placed Jake Lamb on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, the result of a stress reaction in the third baseman's left foot. In Lamb's place, the club promoted first baseman/outfielder Danny Dorn, who made his debut in Tuesday night's game.

Manager Chip Hale said the team caught a break by diagnosing Lamb's injury before it became a fracture, which means he could be back in three weeks, as opposed to missing months.

Lamb said he began feeling some discomfort in his foot last Friday in San Francisco and had his foot wrapped tightly when he played Friday and Saturday. Sunday, though, the foot wasn't feeling any better, and the team decided to send him for an MRI.

Cuban free agent Yasmany Tomas got his first Major League start Tuesday at third base in Lamb's absence. Hale said he would use a platoon of Tomas, Aaron Hill, Cliff Pennington and Jordan Pacheco at the position while Lamb is out.

Dorn had spent nine years in the Minor Leagues waiting for his first crack at the Majors. He was called upon to pinch-hit in the seventh inning Tuesday night and drew a walk before being stranded at third base.

After impressing the staff during Spring Training, Dorn hit .474 in his first 10 games for Triple-A Reno, to earn the promotion.

"I think every kid starts playing baseball and wants to play in the Major Leagues, and I'm fortunate and blessed to be able to come up here and play in the Major Leagues," Dorn said. "It's awesome. It's been kind of crazy the last 24 hours, but you just try to enjoy it and take it all in. I know everyone wants to be able to call themselves a big leaguer, and I'm able to do that now."

After Reno manager Phil Nevin gave Dorn the news, Dorn first called his wife, Brittany, and then his parents.

"I feel like it's just as much for my family as it is for me," Dorn said. "They're there for me through the struggles, the ups and downs. I played in the Minor Leagues for a long time, and my parents sit there and watch the game on the computer and every time I strike out they feel it just as much as I do."

Catcher Gerald Laird was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Dorn on the 40-man roster.
