Former American League MVP Guerrero retires
Slugger, who hit 449 homers during career, last played in 2011
Vladimir Guerrero, who won the 2004 American League Most Valuable Player Award, is officially retiring from baseball nearly two years after playing his last game in the big leagues, according to the Associated Press.
According to the report, Guerrero told a radio station in his native Dominican Republic that he made the decision partly because of the lingering effects from two surgeries on his right knee.
Guerrero, a nine-time All-Star, last played for the Orioles in 2011. He was a career .318 hitter over 16 seasons -- eight with the Expos, six with the Angels, one with the Rangers and one with the Orioles. He hit 449 career home runs.
The 38-year-old reportedly told Z101.3 FM that he regrets not reaching the 500-home run mark, but wishes to spend more time with his family.
