Fort Myers is special for Holt and his wife

For Valentine's Day, Red Sox super utility man Brock Holt will be with his wife, Lakyn, under the sun of Fort Myers, Fla., as the couple gets ready for the start of another Spring Training. But two years ago, when they were still in the dating phase, Lakyn was back home in Pennsylvania for that holiday, which is also her birthday.

When the couple reunited on March 4, 2013, Lakyn had no idea about the type of birthday/Valentine's Day celebration that awaited her.

After a nice dinner at a restaurant on Fort Myers Beach, Brock suggested the couple take a walk. Not long into the stroll, he got down on one knee and asked Lakyn to be his wife.

Some of his Red Sox teammates had encouraged him to do something more elaborate. David Ross had mentioned how he used a dolphin as a prop for his engagement. But the low-key Brock stayed true to his personality, and Lakyn was thrilled.

"That's how we are, and that's how our wedding was. I like the way he did it," Lakyn Holt said.

'That's more my style," said Brock Holt. "I kind of had a plan of what I wanted to do, but whenever I mentioned it, they were like, 'You can't do it like that.' It kind of got in my head a little bit. I was like, 'The beach is pretty romantic, so I can do that."'

Of course, one of the keys to any successful proposal is keeping the surprise element.

"I think I surprised her," said Brock Holt. "I did a good job keeping it cool throughout dinner and not really spilling the beans. I don't think I was too nervous, because I figured she'd say yes."

"He had given me my birthday present a little earlier, and I was like, 'There's no way he's going to buy me a birthday present and a ring.' So that kind of threw me off," said Lakyn Holt. "And then, he asked me if I wanted to go to the beach. We went to the beach and he asked me to marry him, and I was absolutely shocked. Obviously, I said yes."
