Springer named Astros' Clemente Award nominee

ARLINGTON -- Outfielder George Springer was announced as the Astros' nominee for the 2015 Roberto Clemente Award on Monday, given annually to the Major Leaguer who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field, recognizing sportsmanship and community involvement.

"It's obviously an honor, and it's exciting," Springer said before Houston's game against Texas. "There isn't much to say. I'm honored and humbled by it."

Springer, who speaks with a stutter, is a spokesperson for the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), and hosted the first George Springer Bowling Classic in July to benefit SAY. Chevrolet will present a $7,500 check to SAY as part of Springer's nomination prior to the Astros' series opener against the A's on Friday at Minute Maid Park.

Springer has also supported the Astros Urban Youth Academy and Astros Community Leaders in addition to his work with SAY.

Springer was also named the Astros' winner of the Heart & Hustle Award in July. That award -- honoring active players who demonstrate a passion for the game and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of baseball -- is given to one player from each club.
