Getz ejected after close play at first base

KANSAS CITY -- Royals second baseman Chris Getz was ejected from Saturday's game against the Angels in the wake of a close play at first base.

Getz was called out by umpire Marty Foster to complete a double play that ended the fifth inning. With runners at first and third, Getz grounded to second baseman Howie Kendrick. When Getz was called out on shortstop Erick Aybar's relay to first, manager Ned Yost and Getz protested the decision.

If Getz had been safe, Mike Moustakas would have scored for a 1-1 tie. As it turned out, that was the last pitch made by Angels starter Billy Buckner in his five innings of a 7-0 victory.

"That was huge. It was a good turn by the guys," Buckner said." I had a feeling that was about as far as they wanted to extend me today, but I didn't feel [tired]."

Foster is the same umpire who made the controversial safe call on the Angels' Mike Trout in Friday night's 5-2 Royals loss, ruling that Getz missed the tag.

After the play on Saturday, Getz was in the field for the top of the sixth but had some choice words for Foster as he left between innings.

"It was obviously some frustration, maybe a little bit of carryover from the night prior," Getz said. "Close play at first base. He had it one way, I had it another. I said some things, he didn't like it, tossed me and that was the end of it."

It was the second ejection of Getz's career. He was replaced by Elliot Johnson.
