Cain takes step forward, throws in outfield

Giants starter plays catch at 60 feet, plans to repeat exercise Wednesday

LOS ANGELES -- Resuming his recovery efforts, Giants right-hander Matt Cain played catch Tuesday amid hopes that when he regains his pitching health, he'll stay that way.

Cain, who began the season on the disabled list wih a strained right flexor tendon, made 25 throws to athletic trainer Dave Groeschner in the Dodger Stadium outfield at a distance of 60 feet.

"If it was farther or shorter, it was Dave's fault," Cain jokingly said.

Cain didn't push himself too much.

"The intensity wasn't very high," he said. "But the ball felt like it was coming out fine."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Cain will repeat the exercise Wednesday and might attempt to "ratchet up" the force of his throws. Even if Cain doesn't throw harder, Bochy said of the erstwhile ace's rehabilitation, "It's a start."
