Bochy less likely to argue under new replay system

PHOENIX -- As Giants manager Bruce Bochy saw it Wednesday, baseball's new replay system saved him some fine money.

Noting that he regarded four separate umpires' calls as worth reviewing during San Francisco's 5-4 loss Tuesday to Arizona, Bochy said that in any previous season, "I probably would have gotten thrown out of that game, that's for sure."

But the challenge system, which upheld the safe ruling Bochy challenged on a fourth-inning pickoff attempt, dampened the skipper's ardor for an argument.

"It does change the game," Bochy said.

Bochy left the dugout to question umpire Chris Guccione's foul ruling on Joaquin Arias' sharply hit ball past first base, then an out call on Hunter Pence, who tried to beat out a grounder. Bochy stopped short of challenging both calls on the advice of Giants video reviewer Shawon Dunston.

Bochy lost his challenge of Matt Cain's unsuccessful pickoff of A.J. Pollock, preventing him from requesting another review later in the fourth inning when umpire Eric Cooper decided that Pollock eluded Cain's tag at home plate.
