Giants sign first-round pick Chris Stratton
SAN FRANCISCO, CA –The San Francisco Giants have signed right-handed pitcher, Chris Stratton, their first round selection (20th overall) in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today.
Stratton, who attended Mississippi State, joined former first round pick Will Clark as the only first round selections from Mississippi State by the Giants.
The, 6-3, 198-pound right-hander from Tupelo, Mississippi is one of 30 semi-finalists for this year’s Golden Spikes award as well as a semifinalist for the NCBWA’s Dick Howser Trophy. The right-hander lead the Southeastern Conference with 11 wins and a 2.21 ERA (25er, 102.0ip), while finishing second with 123 strikeouts. Overall, Stratton went 11-2 with 1 save, while walking 25 batters and holding opponents to a .211 batting average against. Stratton was named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division One All-American First Team as well as the 2012 All-SEC First Team. He received the C Spire Ferriss Trophy, given each year to the top collegiate baseball player in Mississippi.
In addition to Stratton, San Francisco has signed 21 other players from the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The Giants have come to terms with 10 of their first 20 selections from last week’s draft and have now signed 11 of their 21 pitchers, three of four catchers, four of seven infielders and four of eight outfielders.
The pitchers include: RHP Chris Stratton (1st), LHP Joseph Kurrasch (8th), RHP Ian Gardeck (16th), RHP Christopher Johnson (17th), LHP Randall Zeigler (19th), LHP Andrew Leenhouts (23rd), LHP Mason McVay (26th), LHP Chris Fern (27th), RHP Jason Forjet (31st), LHP Christopher Pickering (32nd) and RHP Brandon Farley (33rd).
The position players include: catchers Leonardo Rojas (15th), Benjamin Turner (21st) and Sam Eberle (25th); infielders Jeremy Sy (12th), Ryan Jones (13th), Matthew Duffy (18th) and Joseph Rapp (28th); outfielders Shilo McCall (9th), Brennan Metzger (22nd), Andrew Cain (24th) and Shayne Houck (29th).
