Gimenez clears waivers, undecided on returning to Texas

HOUSTON -- Chris Gimenez cleared waivers on Saturday, two days after the Rangers designated the catcher for assignment. He's been offered outright assignment and he will take a couple of days to make a decision.

Gimenez can refuse assignment and take free agency. Rangers manager Ron Washington hopes Gimenez remains with the organization.

"Definitely. He brings a lot," said Washington. "He's a very versatile guy, he's a good teammate. I hope he sticks.

"Once he cleared waivers I reached out to him. Reiterated just like I did before we optioned him out. We'd like to keep him. It's really his decision. I let him know how much we want him. We know him, he knows us."

Gimenez was hitting .262 in 34 games for Texas. On Friday, the Rangers activated catcher Geovany Soto from the 15-day disabled list. Gimenez and Robinson Chirinos shared playing time at catcher while Soto was on the DL.
