Goldy, Anderson lead D-backs past Angels

PHOENIX -- D-backs starter Chase Anderson pitched six strong innings and Paul Goldschmidt hit his 19th home run of the season to pave the way to a 3-2 victory against the Angels in front of 28,481 at Chase Field on Wednesday night.

The victory was Arizona's fifth in its last six games.

The D-backs took an early 1-0 lead on Goldschmidt's home run in the first inning. Yasmany Tomas chipped in with a RBI triple in the third, and Arizona extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a home run by catcher Welington Castillo. Matt Joyce led off the fifth inning with a single and scored the Angels' first run. Kole Calhoun scored the Halos' second run the next inning to cut the deficit to one run.

Angels starter Hector Santiago was charged with three runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. He struck out nine. Anderson, meanwhile, struck out two batters and walked one for his third win.

"Probably not as crisp," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Santiago. "Hector early on was missing a lot of spots, was working uphill a lot, as far as trying to get back into counts."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Missed opportunities: The Angels missed out on several big scoring chances. In the fourth inning, they had runners on first and third with two outs, but David Freese grounded out to first. Joyce and Johnny Giavotella led off the fifth with consecutive singles, but the Halos got just one run out of it when Chris Iannetta grounded into a double play. After Calhoun singled and Mike Trout doubled to open the sixth, they again struck for just one run and stranded runners on the corners. And in the seventh, the Angels had runners on second and third with none out and didn't score. The Angels were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

"Offensively, we did a lot of good things," Scioscia said. "The one bump in the road tonight was hitting with runners in scoring position." More >

Gold(y) standard: Goldschmidt is the leading vote-getter among National League first basemen for the All-Star Game, and it didn't take him long to show why he is among the game's favorite players. Goldschmidt's first-inning home run, his 19th homer of the season, was projected by Statcast™ to land 415 feet away and came off his bat at 106 mph. Overall, Goldschmidt has reached base in 27 consecutive games. More >

Three more for Tomas: Tomas has only three home runs this season, but he's still been one of the club's most productive hitters. Tomas notched three more hits Wednesday, including an RBI triple in the third that gave the D-backs a 2-0 lead. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 13, 23 of his last 27 games and is among NL rookie leaders in several offensive categories.

Twice not as nice: Two of the three runs that Santiago allowed came on solo home runs, making it the third time in his last four starts that Santiago gave up two home runs.

"When I made my pitch, they either swung through it or struck out looking," Santiago said. "When I hung it, they hit it well. I think I threw four bad pitches in the zone, and four of them got crushed -- two homers, a triple and a double."

QUOTABLE
"It's impressive that he's so patient and he can be 0-2 in a count and still hurt you. It's like his approach is just perfect." -- Santiago, on Goldschmidt

"He almost threw a no-hitter the other day in San Fran. It was a great game and the guys fed off of it, they enjoyed it. He got those other pitchers going. He's becoming a leader on the staff is what he is doing." -- D-backs manager Chip Hale, on Anderson

WHAT'S NEXT
Angels: C.J. Wilson looks for another strong outing in the last of four games against the D-backs at 12:40 p.m. PT. Wilson pitched seven scoreless, two-hit innings against the Athletics last Saturday after posting a 5.76 ERA in his four starts prior to that. The left-hander is making his first career start against the D-backs.

D-backs: The home team is looking for a repeat performance from Allen Webster. The right-hander held the Giants hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings of his Arizona debut on June 13. He is 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings pitched against the Angels in his career.
