Hendriks pleased with his first Grapefruit outing
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Twins rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings. but the Rays scored three runs off Deolis Guerra in the 10th to hand Minnesota a 10-7 loss in the Hammond Stadium opener on Sunday.
Guerra gave up an RBI single to Leslie Anderson with two outs before serving up a two-run blast to Mark Thomas.
It spoiled a late rally by the Twins. Brandon Boggs started it with a three-run blast off reliever Jim Patterson with none out in the ninth before Wilkin Ramirez brought home a run with an RBI groundout. Chris Colabello tied it up with a RBI single to score Darin Mastroianni, who served as a pinch-runner and stole second base.
The Rays rallied for a three-run sixth inning against reliever Brian Duensing and added three more runs against Anthony Slama in the eighth.
Jason Bourgeois brought home the first run in the sixth against Duensing on an RBI single before Mike Fontenot added an RBI single of his own, while Tim Beckham reached on a run-scoring error from Justin Morneau.
It was Fontenot's second RBI, as he scored Bourgeois on a RBI double in the second inning against Twins starter Liam Hendriks. Hendriks ended up giving up one run on two hits and a walk over two innings.
"I'm happy with my first outing of Spring Training," said Hendriks, who threw 32 pitches with 20 going for strikes. "The ball was coming out well. I threw some offspeed stuff for strikes, which was good."
Right-hander Chris Archer started for the Rays and tossed a scoreless first inning. He struck out one and walked one.
The Twins got on the board in the third inning on an RBI double from Jamey Carroll to score Pedro Florimon, who doubled to lead off the frame. Florimon scored again in the fifth on an RBI single from prospect Eddie Rosario.
Twins closer Glen Perkins also threw a scoreless third inning. He struck out the first two batters he faced on just six pitches.
Up next for the Twins: Right-hander Vance Worley is set to make his Twins debut on Monday, when they host the Pirates at 1:05 p.m. CT at Hammond Stadium. Worley, who was acquired in the trade that sent Ben Revere to the Phillies, is expected to throw two innings or about 40 pitches. Right-hander Kyle McPherson is scheduled to start for the Pirates.
