Hometown hero Larkin named All-Star spokesman
Cincinnati's former star shortstop to help get word out, attend festivities
The 2015 All-Star Game is getting a Hall of Fame spokesman.
Major League Baseball announced Thursday that Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin will assist in getting the word out about the Midsummer Classic, which will take place in his hometown of Cincinnati. Larkin will work with Todd Frazier, the Reds' third baseman and a 2014 All-Star.
Larkin, a 12-time All-Star, will help generate awareness for the All-Star Game and its surrounding events. Larkin will also make several appearances during All-Star Week in Cincinnati, the city where he was born and attended high school before becoming the Reds' star shortstop.
Larkin led the Reds to the 1990 World Series championship and earned the 1995 National League Most Valuable Player Award. He was selected fourth overall in the 1985 MLB Draft by Cincinnati, and he played all 19 of his seasons with his hometown team. Larkin won MLB's Roberto Clemente Award in 1993.
The All-Star Game will take place on July 14 at Great American Ball Park, and Cincinnati will also host Gatorade All-Star Workout Day on July 13 and All-Star Sunday on July 12. The T-Mobile All-Star FanFest will run July 10-14 at the Duke Energy Convention Center.
