Fenway Park to host first football game since '68

Notre Dame, Boston College to meet under the lights on Nov. 21, 2015

BOSTON -- Fenway Park will hold its first football game in over four decades on Nov. 21, 2015, when Boston College welcomes Notre Dame to the home of the Red Sox.

Fenway Sports Management made the announcement on Friday for a game that will be played under the lights (7:30 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast on NBC.

This will mark the first football game at Fenway since the Patriots -- back then the Boston Patriots of the American Football League -- completed their five-year run of home games at Fenway in 1968.

"The City of Boston will be ready to welcome Fighting Irish and Eagles fans alike when Fenway brings this historic rivalry to one of our most beloved landmarks in 2015," Mayor Thomas M. Menino said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to a memorable weekend that puts Boston, and all the great things our city has to offer, in the national spotlight."

The game will be part of Notre Dame's annual Shamrock Series, in which it hosts a game at an off-site location.

In recent years, Fenway has spread its wings to all kinds of events beyond baseball, including many concerts and the National Hockey League's Winter Classic between the Bruins and Flyers back in 2010.

Next month, there will be several college hockey games at Fenway, including one between Boston College and Notre Dame on Jan. 4.

"We are pleased to bring one of football's most historic rivalries to Fenway Park as we host the Fighting Irish and Eagles in what will be the first football game at Fenway in 47 years," said Fenway Sports Management President and Red Sox EVP/COO Sam Kennedy. "We look forward to hosting Notre Dame and Boston College, and welcoming the many alumni from both schools to New England for what we hope will be a memorable matchup."
