Bourn suspended 1 game following ejection

CLEVELAND -- Indians center fielder Michael Bourn did not feel he deserved to be ejected from Tuesday night's game at Wrigley Field. Prior to Thursday's game agianst the Cubs, Major League Baseball announced that it felt Bourn was deserving of a suspension for his actions.

MLB announced that Bourn received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi in the middle of the fourth inning of Tuesday's 6-0 win over the Cubs. Bourn is appealing the suspension and is currently eligible to keep playing for the Indians while the situation is reviwed.

Bourn got into a heated argument with Cuzzi as a result of a called third strike in the fourth that the center fielder felt was a ball.

"I went up and told him I thought the ball was six inches outside, which it was," Bourn said after Tuesday's game. "I looked at it and it was out. He said, 'That's what you came to tell me?' I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'You can't wait until you come up to bat to tell me? That's when you should tell me.' I said, 'I felt like saying it now.' And he tossed me. I didn't cuss at him. I didn't say anything derogatory to him. I feel like I had a right to talk to him about it."

Before taking his position in for the bottom of the fourth inning, Bourn approached Cuzzi near home plate to discuss the call. The home-plate umpire wasted little time in ejecting the center fielder, who then reacted angrily on the field and, at some point, made contact with Cuzzi.

Bourn was in Thursday's lineup as Cleveland's center fielder and No. 8 hitter.
