Unhittable: Cosart tosses 5 no-hit innings in win
Red Sox No. 22 prospect records second start of the season without allowing a hit for Spinners
Jake Cosart's path to pro ball may have been less traditional than most college players, but he made the game look easy on Wednesday.
Boston's No. 22 prospect threw five no-hit innings for Class A Short Season Lowell, striking out two while giving up four walks in the Spinners' 4-1 win over West Virginia. He was pulled after the fifth inning after 85 pitches -- 53 for strikes. The five innings were a career-high for Cosart, who picked up his first career win.
"I'm really excited," Cosart told MiLB.com. "I thought I already had a win by now, but I guess I haven't gone five innings. It was nice to get the first one under my belt, especially at home."
Now 1-1 in four starts this season, the younger brother of Marlins hurler Jarred Cosart also tossed four innings of no-hit ball during his June 21 debut this year, allowing three walks against three strikeouts and no runs.
Cosart went undrafted out of high school in 2011 and then transferred to Seminole State (Fla.) following his freshman year at Duke. The right-hander broke out for the Raiders and became the second junior college player drafted in 2014, when Boston selected him with the No. 103 overall pick.
The 21-year-old went 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in seven starts for the GCL Red Sox last summer. Cosart cut his 2015 ERA from 9.72 to 6.08 on Wednesday.
"I just made a lot of adjustments coming off my last outing," he told MiLB.com. "I was a little spotty. I let some stuff get to me that I shouldn't. This outing, I worked on controlling my emotions and getting ahead and pounding the strike zone."
