Fernandez helps give 'The Jose Guy' haircut

MIAMI -- With Marlins ace Jose Fernandez returning on Thursday, it was time for the departure of the hair and beard of Andres Salgado -- aka "The Jose Guy."

"The hair comes and goes," Salgado said prior to Wednesday's game against the Giants at Marlins Park. "But to have a caliber player like Jose is amazing."

In response to Fernandez going on the disabled list after having Tommy John surgery in May 2014, the 30-year-old Salgado posted a video of himself shaving his head and beard while vowing not to cut his hair again until Fernandez returned.

He kept his word for the past 13 months, and to honor Fernandez's return to the rotation, "The Jose Guy" had his hair and beard cut by Fernandez and team barber Hugo Tandron on Wednesday afternoon in an event held in the visitors' bullpen at Marlins Park. Additionally, Salgado sent all proceeds from a charity auction -- which received a $1,000 donation from "Marlins Man" Laurence Leavy -- to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"It was not only to show my support for Jose, but for the Marlins family as a whole," Salgado said.

Fernandez, who recently completed a rehab stint in preparation of his return Thursday afternoon vs. the Giants, said he was aware of Salgado's project and he saw the super fan occasionally over the past 13 months.

"It's crazy. I mean, I wouldn't do it," Fernandez said. "I probably would try but have no result. It is nice and I think it's good. It's always good to feel the love from the fans."
