Hamilton says he's day-to-day after X-ray on hand

ST. PETERSBURG -- Josh Hamilton suffered a contusion on his left middle finger, and possibly a fracture, in Friday night's 5-3 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Hamilton, who was serving as the designated hitter for the Angels in the series opener, was hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay reliever Jeff Beliveau in the seventh inning. The up-and-in fastball hit Hamilton on the left hand.

After the game, Hamilton said that he was day-to-day. He said he had X-rays on his finger, which revealed a fracture, but he had broken the finger a few years ago and said the doctors were not sure if the fracture was new or old.

"I'll come in tomorrow and throw, see how that feels," Hamilton said. "Tomorrow's a big day. I've got to come back in tomorrow and see how it feels -- if it's hurting tremendously and I can't throw or grip a bat, then it's a different story. Tomorrow will be the day."

When he was hit, Hamilton slowly made his way to first base, where he was examined by the Angels' training staff. The Angels announced the injury, but Hamilton was never removed from the game.

His spot in the order never came up again, but Hamilton had taken some swings in the batting cage and was scheduled to bat leading off the 10th inning if the game had gone to extras, manager Mike Scioscia said.

Hamilton had homered to right field to give the Angels a 4-1 lead earlier in the game.
