Schwarber's thump leads WC GIF offerings
The Cubs rolled into Pittsburgh for their first postseason game since 2008 and blanked the Pirates, 4-0, on Wednesday night to advance to the National League Division Series against the rival Cardinals.
Jake Arrieta was brilliant in a four-hit shutout and the Cubs got home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Dexter Fowler to win the NL Wild Card Game presented by Budweiser and secure the organization's first postseason victory since 2003. Here's a look at some of the top moments, courtesy of @MLBGIFs.
1. Schwarber's power
Schwarber drove in the first three runs for the Cubs, including two with this majestic drive to right field off Pirates starter Gerrit Cole that traveled a projected 450 feet, according to Statcast™.
2. Fowler's reaction
Fowler pumps his fist on the bases, watching as Schwarber's homer gives the Cubs an early 3-0 lead. Fowler paced the Cubs with three hits and three runs scored.
3. Bryant at the hot corner
Rookie third baseman Kris Bryant keeps his eye on the ball and displays great concentration to snag a line drive and take a hit away from Gregory Polanco.
4. Double play excites Arrieta
Arrieta bounces off the mound after the Cubs turn a slick double play up the middle to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth.
5. Rizzo loves it, too
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is pumped up after the inning-ending DP in the sixth prevented the Pirates from rallying.
6. Rodriguez vs. cooler
After the benches cleared in the top of the seventh, Pirates utility man Sean Rodriguez took his frustration out on a Gatorade cooler in the dugout. While Rodriguez was able to get a few good licks in, he was also ejected from the game.
7. Kid's got a future
This young Pirates fan was blessed with great seats, close enough to the action to mimic reliever Joakim Soria. Keep working on that delivery, young man.
8. Bear hug
Cubs manager Joe Maddon shares a moment with Arrieta after the right-hander's dominant performance, which included 11 strikeouts and no walks.
9. Cubs rejoice
Arrieta takes a ride on Rizzo's shoulders as the Cubs rush the field to celebrate advancing in the postseason for the first time since 2003.
