Longtime executive Zaidi earns promotion

OAKLAND -- The A's have promoted longtime executive Farhan Zaidi to the title of assistant general manager/director of baseball operations.

The 37-year-old stats guru is entering his 10th season in the A's front office, serving as director of baseball operations for the last five and often traveling with the team in that time.

He didn't take the traditional route into the baseball scene, earning a B.S. in economics from MIT before earning his Ph.D in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, initially joining the A's as a baseball operations analyst in 2005.

Zaidi is second in line under general manager Billy Beane, as David Forst remains Beane's top assistant GM.
