Marlins hiring DelPiano to oversee Minors operations

MIAMI -- The restructuring of the Marlins' front office is underway. The organization is expected to hire Marc DelPiano to oversee its Minor League operations, MLB.com has confirmed.

ESPN's Keith Law first reported DelPiano will be leaving the Pirates to return to the Marlins, where he was the director of player development during the 2003 World Series championship season. The Marlins have not announced or commented on the report.

DelPiano has been a special assistant to the general manager with the Pirates.

The Marlins have been courting DelPiano for several months, sources say. Miami also has interest in another Pittsburgh special assistant to the general manager, Jim Benedict. But it is unclear if the Pirates will make Benedict, a highly valued pitching evaluator, available.

Last week, the Marlins made some front-office changes, reassigning Marty Scott and Craig Weissmann. The team has not officially announced those changes.

Scott has been the vice president of player development, and Weissmann has been vice president of player personnel.

The Marlins remain in the process of deciding what is next for manager Dan Jennings.

Jennings met with upper management regarding his status on Thursday. He is expected to remain with the Marlins in 2016, but in what capacity is unknown.

Most likely, Jennings will go back to his general manager chair, but whether his responsibilities will be the same as before he became manager has not been decided.

A well-respected evaluator with more than three decades of professional experience, Jennings might have general manager options elsewhere. He's been linked to the Mariners, Orioles and Angels. But Jennings, under contract through 2018, is expected to stay with the Marlins, where he remains in good standing.
