Saunders exits after hyperextending left knee
Outfielder injured in third inning while pursuing triple in right-field corner
SEATTLE -- Mariners right fielder Michael Saunders was replaced by Stefen Romero in the fourth inning of Saturday's 3-1 win over the Royals at Safeco Field after hyperextending his left knee when he fell awkwardly while pursuing a triple by Mike Moustakas.
Manager Lloyd McClendon said he didn't know the extent of Saunders' injury at this point as the 27-year-old will be re-evaluated Sunday.
"Right now I've just been told it's day to day," McClendon said.
Saunders stumbled as he raced for Moustakas' line drive down the line in the third inning, then got up and limped after the ball in the corner as Moustakas reached third base, from where he eventually scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly.
Saunders remained in the outfield the rest of that inning, but was replaced the following frame by Romero.
Saunders grounded out in his lone at-bat in the second and is hitting .222 with one home run and seven RBIs in 32 games.
