Mariners promote three scouting supervisors

SEATTLE -- Ben Collman, Chris Pelekoudas and Mike Moriarty have been promoted by the Mariners from area scouts to new regional supervisory positions, director of amateur scouting Tom McNamara announced on Monday.

The club also announced the hiring of six new area scouts: Tyrus Bowman, Amanda Hopkins, Jackson Laumann, Taylor Terrasas, Stephen Tromblee and Ross Vecchio. Hopkins, whose hiring was first reported by MLB.com earlier this month, is believed to be the first woman hired as a full-time scout by a Major League club since the 1950s.

Collman, who is based in Texas, was promoted from a Midwest area scouting spot to Midwest supervisor. He has been with the Mariners since 2012 after previously working as the scouting coordinator for Perfect Game USA.

Pelekoudas, who has been with the Mariners since 2003 and is based out of Arizona, was promoted from a West area scout to West Coast supervisor. He is the son of former Mariners associate general manager Lee Pelekoudas and grandson of longtime National League umpire Chris Pelekoudas.

Moriarity, based in New Jersey, was promoted from a Northeast area scout to Northeast supervisor. Moriarty played for the Orioles in 2002 and was in the Minor Leagues for 11 seasons. He joined the Mariners' scouting department in 2009.

Hopkins, 22, spent the past three seasons as an intern in the Mariners' amateur scouting department. She is the daughter of longtime MLB scout Ron Hopkins and will be the area scout in the "Four Corners" area of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. She graduated this year from Central Washington, where she was captain of the women's softball team the last two years.

Bowman will be the new area scout in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas after spending the last three seasons as a baseball operations/video intern covering Minor League teams for the Padres. He is a 2010 Arizona graduate and got his law degree from Arizona last May.

Laumann, who played in the Braves' Minor League system from 2012-14, will be the new area scout in Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. He is the son of Doug Laumann, the former scouting director and current special assistant to the White Sox general manager.

Terrasas is the new area scout in North Texas and Louisiana. He played in the Reds' and Marlins' Minor League systems in 2013-14 after graduating from Louisiana Tech in '13. Terrasas is the son of former Mets scouting director Rudy Terrasas.

Tromblee takes over as the area scout in South Texas after spending last year as a teacher and coach in Columbus, Texas. A 2011 graduate of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, he played in the Angels' Minor League system from 2011-14.

Vecchio will be the new area scout overseeing Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia. He's worked as a part-time scout for the Mariners since 2009, while also serving as the director of athletic development for California University of Pennsylvania. Vecchio also has spent 17 seasons as a general manager of several Minor League and independent league teams.
