Halo, offense! Mariners score 9 runs in 2nd

SEATTLE -- The Mariners tied their season-high with nine runs in the second inning of Friday's 11-8 win against the Angels -- and they did so without the benefit of an extra-base hit.

"We were down four [after the top of the first], but you never would have known it in our dugout," Manager Scott Servais said. "We were pretty determined tonight."

The Mariners sent 14 batters to the plate in the second inning, getting six singles and five walks. Dae-Ho Lee and Ketel Marte each had two hits in the inning.

An inning like that, Leonys Martin said, "It's going to give you a lot of confidence."

Seattle knocked Angels starter Brett Oberholtzer out of the game just four batters into the second inning. Lee starting things off with a single. Then Martin and Mike Zunino each drew walks to load the bases. Marte drove in the first run of the inning with a line drive to right field, and that would do it for Oberholtzer.

"All the pieces around the core, when those guys get rolling and create havoc on the bases … it takes pressure off the middle of the lineup," Servais said.

Jhoulys Chacin replaced Oberholtzer, but didn't fare any better. He walked three batters, one intentionally, and gave up four singles. There was potential double-play ball in the inning that was botched, which extended the inning.

With the bases loaded, Guillermo Heredia hit a ground ball to third baseman Yunel Escobar. Escobar threw Ben Gamel out at second while Zunino scored. Second baseman Gregorio Petit attempted to turn the double play, but with an errant throw, Heredia reached first safely and Marte scored.

The Mariners have scored nine runs in an inning once earlier this season, on June 2 against the Padres.
