Mariners select LHP Oliver Perez, option RHP Steve Delabar to AAA, DFA Chih-Hsien Chiang

Outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang designated for assignment to create room on Mariners 40-man roster

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today the following roster moves:

  • LHP Oliver Pérez selected from AAA Tacoma
  • RHP Steve Delabar optioned to AAA Tacoma
  • OF Chih-Hsien Chiang designated for assignment

The Mariners Major League 40-man roster remains full.

Pérez (#36) will be in uniform for tonight’s game vs. the Giants (7:10 pm) at Safeco Field.

Pérez, 30, was 2-2 with 1 save and a 4.65 ERA (16 ER, 31.0 IP) with 42 strikeouts in 22 relief appearances with Triple-A Tacoma. His 12.19 strikeouts per nine innings ratio led all Pacific Coast relievers (42 K, 31.0 IP). Pérez has not appeared in a Major League game since October 3, 2010 with the New York Mets.

Pérez is a veteran of nine Major League seasons with San Diego (2002-03), Pittsburgh (2003-06) and New York-NL (2006-10). He has a career record of 58-69 with a 4.63 ERA (572 ER, 1111.2 IP) with 628 strikeouts in 206 games including 195 starts. He did not appear at the Major League level in 2011.

Delabar, 28, returns to Tacoma after being recalled on June 13 and making one appearance with Seattle, 2.0 shutout innings on June 14 against San Diego. He was optioned to Tacoma on May 30 (post-game). He has appeared in 26 games with the Mariners this season, going 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA (14 ER, 26.1 IP). In four appearances with the Rainiers he allowed only one hit in 5.0 shutout innings.

Chiang, 24, has split the season between Triple-A Tacoma and Double-A Jackson where he combined to hit .242 (56x231) with 24 runs, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 59 games. Chiang was acquired from Boston on July 31, 2011 in exchange for LHP Erik Bedard and RHP Josh Fields.
