Mariners ink De Fratus to one-year deal

SEATTLE -- Justin De Fratus, a right-handed reliever who pitched for the Phillies the past five seasons, signed a one-year Major League contract with the Mariners on Wednesday, the club announced.

CBSSports.com reported the deal is for $750,000, plus possible incentives.

"Justin gives us another young, Major League-ready arm in the mix for our bullpen," general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "He brings us one step closer to the type of depth we believe is required to be truly competitive in this league. Justin remains a young pitcher with good stuff who has been both durable and resilient as a Major Leaguer, while also being just one year removed from an excellent 2014 season."

The Mariners had an opening on their 40-man roster after trading Mark Trumbo and lefty reliever C.J. Riefenhauser to the Orioles for catcher Steve Clevenger.

De Fratus, 28, went 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA in 80 innings over 61 appearances in 2015 after going 3-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 52 2/3 innings in 54 outings in '14.

In parts of five seasons with the Phillies, the 6-foot-4 De Fratus posted a 4.08 ERA with 170 strikeouts in 194 innings. He was an 11th round Draft pick of the Phillies in 2007.

De Fratus was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Oct. 9.
