Stats of the Day: Buehrle has Twins' number

Here are five interesting items from around the big leagues on Thursday …

• In the Blue Jays' 9-3 win vs. the Twins, Mark Buehrle picked up career victory No. 211, with 30 of those 211 coming against Minnesota. The 30 represent the most for any pitcher vs. the Twins, and they make Buehrle one of 21 pitchers to have at least 30 wins against a single franchise since 1961 (the year the Twins moved from Washington). Bert Blyleven's 34 wins vs. Royals are the most vs. any team in that span.

• In the Yankees' 2-1 victory over the Red Sox, Alex Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk. Rodriguez has amassed 42 extra-base hits in 428 plate appearances this season, and he holds an OPS+ of 156. Among qualifying players in age-39 or older seasons since 1893, Rodriguez's extra-base hit percentage of 9.81 has been matched or exceeded by seven players (Ted Williams in 1958, Reggie Jackson in '85, Andres Galarraga in 2000, Barry Bonds in '04, Craig Biggio in '05, Jeff Kent in '07 and Chipper Jones in '11), and his OPS+ has been matched or exceeded by four players (Bonds in '04, Williams in '58, Babe Ruth in '34 and Willie Mays in '71).

• Bryce Harper singled twice and drew three walks in the Nationals' 8-3 victory over the D-backs. Harper's day at the dish lifted his on-base percentage to .461. Since 1893, there have been seven qualifying players who finished a season with an on-base percentage of at least .450 while playing in their age-22 or younger season. Only three players have accomplished that feat since the start of the 20th century: Jimmie Foxx (.463 in 1929), Mel Ott (.458 in '30) and Williams (.553 in '41).

• In the Marlins' 9-8 loss to the Braves, Ichiro Suzuki had two hits and two walks. Ichiro played his first Major League game at the age of 27 years and 162 days old, and his latest effort came at the age of 41 years and 288 days. Since 1914, among players between these two exact ages, Suzuki's 867 multihit games are the most, with Pete Rose having the second most, with 811. Ty Cobb ranks third, with 778.

• Michael Wacha (seven innings, four hits) and three Cardinals relievers combined on a five-hitter as St. Louis upended Cincinnati, 3-0. The Cards' team ERA is now 2.63. Among NL teams since 1962, that mark is the fifth lowest through 108 games, behind only the 1968 Cardinals (2.41 ERA), '68 Mets (2.55 ERA), '68 Dodgers (2.58) and '81 Astros ( 2.62).

Milestones watch for Friday

• Jordan Zimmermann needs two strikeouts to tie Livan Hernandez (840) for fifth most in Expos/Nationals history, and he needs five to tie Pedro Martinez (843) for fourth on the franchise's list for Ks.

• Adrian Beltre needs two hits to reach 2,700 for his career. Only 22 players in history have reached that milestone through their age-36 season.
