Reynolds' left hand 'a little sore' after HBP
ST. LOUIS -- Mark Reynolds, who took a fastball off the side of the bottom of his left hand on Saturday, had that hand wrapped much of the morning on Sunday. Manager Mike Matheny described his first baseman as "a little sore," which led Matheny to insert Stephen Piscotty into the lineup for his first-base debut.
Matheny expected that Reynolds would be available off the bench, if needed.
Playing out Saturday's game with a swollen hand, Reynolds did come through with an eighth-inning flyout that was deep enough to advance pinch-runner Pete Kozma to third. That put Kozma in position to score on a sacrifice fly.
Matheny said he had not preplanned Sunday as a day off for Reynolds because he had earmarked the day as one to get Yadier Molina and Jhonny Peralta some rest. Before Sunday, Molina had started 14 straight games. Peralta leads the club with 95 starts.
WORTH NOTING
• Matheny announced that lefty Jaime Garcia will start Tuesday against the Reds, which means that John Lackey will get an extra day of rest and pitch on Wednesday.
• Jordan Walden (right biceps inflammation) is expected to throw in relief for Double-A Springfield on Sunday as part of his continuing rehab assignment. Mitch Harris (right groin strain) made his third rehab appearance for Triple-A Memphis on Saturday and faced the minimum in a scoreless inning.
• Alex Reyes threw four innings in his Double-A debut on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out five while walking one. Reyes, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the organization's second-best pitching prospect, was promoted to Springfield after posting a 2.26 ERA in 13 starts with Class A Advanced Palm Beach.
• The Cardinals announced on Sunday that the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team will play a World Cup Qualifier Match at Busch Stadium later this fall. The date of the game has not been scheduled, but the game will be the first home qualifier match the USMNT plays. The Cardinals will hold a news conference at Ballpark Village at 1 p.m. CT on Monday to announce further details. The news conference will also include a fan question-and-answer session with Tim Ream, a member of the USMNT, and Lori Chalupny, who played on the U.S Women's National Team that just captured the World Cup.
