Lazo first of Marlins' September callups

ATLANTA -- The Marlins used their first September callup to add bullpen depth. Left-hander Raudel Lazo, an international signing out of Cuba in 2011, had his contract selected from Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Lazo, 26, split time this season with Class A Advanced Jupiter and Jacksonville. He'll get a good look at the big league level over the final few weeks of the regular season, and his evaluation will continue into October, as he has been selected to represent the organization in the Arizona Fall League.

"He's got a very nice breaking ball," manager Dan Jennings said. "He's had a good year. He's a kid we signed out of Cuba. We liked his stuff. He had an injury. He's come back from the injury in a good way."

Lazo missed substantial time in 2013 and '14 due to left elbow issues. This season, he bounced back, and his combined Minor League numbers were a 4-3 record with a 1.96 ERA in 41 1/3 innings.

Miami's primary lefty reliever is Mike Dunn. Now, Lazo is another choice.

"We definitely wanted to add another left-hander to that bullpen, and he gives us that option," Jennings said.

To get Lazo onto the 40-man roster, the Marlins transfered third baseman Don Kelly to the 60-day disabled list.
