Coghlan reflects on Memorial Day as league honors vets

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Before heading to the ballpark on Monday, Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan had the privilege of eating breakfast with his brother, Kevin.

A former Marine, Kevin served two tours of duty in Iraq, and he is now graduating from college.

Spending time with family is always special for Coghlan, who is from the Tampa Bay area. Adding to the occasion was the fact his family was together on Memorial Day.

Major League Baseball paid tribute to veterans in several ways on Monday. Every team, including the Marlins, wore camouflage caps and jerseys with camouflage lettering. The digital camouflage design was licensed from the United States Marine Corps. The Marlins and Rays also participated in the National Moment of Remembrance by holding a moment of silence at 3 p.m. prior to the game.

"I think Major League Baseball does a great job of setting aside time and making it a point to remember those who have fought for our freedom," Coghlan said. "I got to see my brother today before he went on a cruise to celebrate his graduation."

Chris has also done his part to recognize those in the armed services. Prior to the 2010 season, the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year was part of a contingent of Marlins players and front office executives to visit troops overseas.

"It was good to see my brother this morning," Coghlan said. "I'm happy for him and proud of him."
