Marlins claim Tracy to add pitching depth

NEW YORK -- The Marlins have added some Minor League pitching depth with big league experience. The club claimed lefty Matt Tracy off waivers from the Yankees, and will assign the 26-year-old to Triple-A New Orleans. To make room for Tracy on the 40-man roster, Miami transferred pitcher Jose Fernandez to 60-day disabled list.

Tracy made his MLB debut on April 11, throwing two innings of relief in the Yankees' 8-4 loss to the Red Sox. New York designated him for assignment after that game.

A 24th-round pick of the Yankees in 2011, Tracy has a 20-22 (3.81 ERA) Minor League record, logging 366 innings.

New Orleans is in need of some depth. Lefty Pat Misch, a non-roster invitee with the Marlins in Spring Training, was set to be in the Zephyrs' rotation. But Misch is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Jose Urena, who opened the season as New Orleans' No. 2 starter, has been called up to the big leagues.

The Marlins are also down one starter, with Henderson Alvarez on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

The Yankees promoted Tracy to add depth the day after they played a 19-inning game against the Red Sox on April 10. The Marlins actually drafted Tracy in the 43rd round in 2010, but the organization was unable to sign the lefty from the University of Mississippi.
