DelPiano hired as VP of player development

Served same role for club's 2003 championship run

MIAMI -- A familiar face is returning to run the Marlins' Minor League system. The organization on Tuesday announced the hiring of Marc DelPiano as the vice president of player development.

DelPiano rejoins the Marlins after being a special assistant to the general manager with the Pirates since 2008. The 48-year-old served as the Marlins director of player development during the 2003 World Series championship season.

The New York native will oversee the Marlins' Minor League operations. He replaces Marty Scott, who has been reassigned within the organization.

DelPiano also was with the Red Sox as a special assignment scout from 2006-08, and he was part of the staff that put together Boston's 2007 World Series title team.
