Marlins unveil bronze plaque to Honor Carl Barger

MIAMI - The Miami Marlins today unveiled a commemorative bronze plaque in honor of the Club's first President and Chief Operating Officer, Carl Barger.

The plaque, located inside the Home Plate Entrance of Marlins Park, recognizes Barger for his role in building the Marlins organization over the first six months of its existence. Barger, who was hired on July 8, 1992, just three days after Major League Baseball's owners unanimously approved the creation of the Marlins, passed away suddenly on December 9, 1992, at the Winter Meetings.

"Carl Barger played an integral role in developing this franchise during its infancy, and setting it on a course to a World Series Championship in just five years," said Marlins President David Samson. "Marlins Park would not be complete without a tribute to Carl and all that he did for the Marlins."

The Marlins dedicated their Inaugural 1993 season to Barger. A native of Lewiston, Pa., he also served as the President of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1987-91.
