Matheny, Farrell pick coaches for All-Star Game

The managers of the 2014 All-Star Game -- National League manager Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals and American League manager John Farrell of the Boston Red Sox -- named their respective coaching staffs for the July 15 Midsummer Classic on Wednesday.

Matheny, who led the Cardinals to a World Series loss last year, will bring Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez and Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle on board the NL's coaching staff. Hurdle was a coach for the NL in 2004, and Gonzalez was a member of the NL's All-Star staff in '07.

Matheny will also invite the Cards' coaches -- bench coach Mike Aldrete, bullpen coach Blaise Ilsley, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, hitting coach John Mabry, first-base coach Chris Maloney, third-base coach Jose Oquendo and bullpen catcher/instructor Jamie Pogue -- to round out his staff.

Farrell, who brought Boston a World Series title last season, has invited Cleveland manager Terry Francona and Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire to be part of his braintrust. Francona has twice served as the manager of the AL team, and Farrell served as his pitching coach at the 2008 All-Star Game. Gardenhire had served as a coach for the AL team in both 2003 and '07.

Farrell's Red Sox staff -- first-base coach Arnie Beyeler, third-base coach Brian Butterfield, hitting coach Greg Colbrunn, bullpen coach Dana LeVangie, bench coach Torey Lovullo, pitching coach Juan Nieves and assistant hitting coach Victor Rodriguez -- will help prepare the AL for the All-Star Game.

The 2014 All-Star Game is the 85th all-time, and it will be played at Target Field in Minnesota on July 15. The game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed.
