Mauer's homers under scrutiny as of late

MILWAUKEE -- Joe Mauer was a little surprised that the umpiring crew reviewed his seventh-inning home run in Monday's game against the Brewers at Miller Park. He was even more surprised given that it was the second time a home run of his was in question in three days.

Mauer's drive to left field Monday was initially ruled a ground-rule double by second-base umpire Angel Hernandez, but crew chief Dana DeMuth ruled it correctly as a homer after a brief review. On Saturday, a Mauer home run was reviewed and upheld against the Tigers.

"I was more surprised that that's the second time that's happened to me in three days," Mauer said. "I'm glad they went in there and looked at it and got it right. I'm 2-for-2, so that's good."

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was in the clubhouse talking with starting pitcher Kevin Correia on Monday when he saw Mauer's drive and Hernandez's ruling. Gardenhire ran onto the field to make sure the umpires took a second look.

"It's always easier to see it on TV than it is close up, and when you're out there as an umpire, running out towards the line, sometimes it's tough," Gardenhire said. "That's why we have that replay to get it right, hopefully."

Mauer's homer was the second implementation of video review at Miller Park this season. The umps also conferred April 30 and overturned a call, resulting in a home run for Pirates outfielder Starling Marte.
