Mariners option righty Guaipe to Triple-A

BOSTON -- Right-handed reliever Mayckol Guaipe was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after Friday's 15-1 loss to the Red Sox and the Mariners will recall another pitcher to take his place prior to Saturday's game at Fenway Park.

Guaipe gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings on Friday and has a 7.50 ERA in eight appearances with Seattle in three different stints in the Majors this year.

The 25-year-old appeared in five games in his latest time with the Mariners, allowing six runs and 13 hits in 7 2/3 innings.

No corresponding move was announced Friday, but the Mariners will add another reliever to help a bullpen that had to soak up 5 2/3 innings in the loss when starter Mike Montgomery only lasted 2 1/3 frames.

"They're stretched out a little more than we'd have liked," manager Lloyd McClendon said after rookies David Rollins, Guaipe and Rob Rasmussen finished up the game. "All of them threw more pitches than we'd have liked. But given the situation -- first day on the road -- sometimes you've got to bite the bullet."

The primary choices to fill the vacancy would figure to be rookie Jose Ramirez, who was acquired from the Yankees two weeks ago in the Dustin Ackley trade, or veteran Danny Farquhar.
