Mejia slated to arrive Friday; catch on tap for Francisco
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Two Mets pitchers who have yet to throw in Florida for different reasons are both nearing returns to the field.
Right-hander Jenrry Mejia, whose arrival in Florida was delayed more than a week by visa issues, is expected to report to camp for the first time Friday. Mejia has been working out in the Dominican Republic and should be in strong enough shape to join his teammates for regular drills on Saturday.
Incumbent closer Frank Francisco will attempt to play catch Monday for the first time since pitchers and catchers officially reported last week. Francisco threw off flat ground earlier this month, but doctors subsequently shut him down due to a bout of right elbow inflammation. The right-hander underwent surgery in December to remove a bone spur from his elbow, and may not be ready for Opening Day.
