Mets call up Verrett, could fill in for Harvey
Club also adds infielder Herrera and catcher Monell to September roster
WASHINGTON -- Right-hander Logan Verrett, who could play a key role down the stretch should the Mets reduce Matt Harvey's workload, was among three additional players the Mets called up Monday after Triple-A Las Vegas ended its season. The club also recalled infielder Dilson Herrera and catcher Johnny Monell.
No one in that trio figures to see as much September playing time as Verrett, the Mets' top choice to replace Harvey once he begins skipping starts due to innings concerns. Verrett has already started once in Harvey's place, firing eight innings of one-run ball Aug. 23 in Denver.
Overall this season, he holds a 3.06 ERA in 14 appearances for the Mets and Rangers, and he is a strong candidate to make the playoff roster as a reliever.

Still one of the youngest players in baseball at age 21, Herrera hit .195 with two home runs in 25 games earlier this season for the Mets. With Las Vegas, the second baseman flourished, batting .331 with 23 doubles and 11 homers in 80 games.
Monell hit .178 with four RBIs in 24 games earlier this year with the Mets. As the Mets' fourth option at catcher, he figures to see most of his playing time as a left-handed pinch-hitter.
The callups bloat New York's active roster to 36 players coming down the stretch, though reliever Carlos Torres could be unavailable for some time after suffering a left calf injury in Monday's 8-5 win over the Nationals.
The callups also mean that the Mets careers of starting pitcher Dillon Gee and reliever Victor Black are likely finished. Both of them were potential callups, and they will become Minor League free agents after the season.
