Mets honor fallen NYPD officer at workout

NEW YORK -- Mets players and coaches at Citi Field on Thursday for the team's optional workout prior to Friday's Game 3 of the World Series (7:30 p.m. ET air time on FOX, 8 p.m. game time) wore NYPD hats to publicly honor officer Randolph Holder, who was killed while on duty last week and promoted posthumously to high detective at his funeral Wednesday.

"Well, our organization supports the NYPD as strong as anyplace I've been around," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I have some very, very close friends where I live in Long Island City that are [with the] New York Police Department, so I'm honoring police officer Holder. And again, the job they do to keep our family safe and myself safe, we need to honor them some more."

The Mets previously wore the caps during batting practice May 5 to support slain officer Brian Moore, and they have worn various versions of caps to pay tribute to the NYPD and FDNY on other occasions over the past few seasons. World Series Game 3 starter Noah Syndergaard also appeared at his news conference wearing the cap on Thursday.

"This is something the organization said we should do today, and I certainly believe in it," Collins said.
