Miami Marlins announce Marlins Fishing for Teachers program
President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill to recognize his most impactful teacher, Mrs. Patricia Dunn from Cincinnati Country Day School, in pregame ceremony
The Miami Marlins today announced the commencement of the "Marlins Fishing for Teachers" program, an initiative unique to the organization that provides Marlins employees with a special way to recognize their most impactful teachers. The program will launch tonight on Jackie Robinson Night, when President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill, the only current African-American to preside over baseball operations for a MLB club, recognizes his high school teacher, Mrs. Patricia Dunn from Cincinnati Country Day School. In honor of her dedication and for inspiring generations of students, the Marlins are hosting Dunn and her husband during their visit from Cincinnati for tonight's recognition ceremony.
"Rarely do we get the opportunity to pay tribute to those who impact our lives," said Hill. "We go on in life and their efforts go unrecognized and uncelebrated. 'Fishing for Teachers' is my chance to acknowledge a special teacher and a wonderful person. Mrs. Dunn, on behalf of the myriad students you have inspired, I say thank you."
Patricia Dunn, a graduate from Colgate University, received her master's degree in English from Middlebury College. She began her teaching career in 1980 at Canterbury School in Connecticut. In 1985, she moved to Cincinnati Country Day School, where she currently serves as the English Department Chair, a college counselor, and a coach for the varsity girl's lacrosse and golf teams. Dunn taught Hill's English class during his junior year, his first year at Country Day.
"Marlins Fishing for Teachers" highlights the core values of the organization's Corporate Social Responsibility and commitment to education. The program provides a platform for all Marlins front office employees to recognize the teachers who helped mold them into professionals.
After the recognition of Hill's most impactful teacher, fans are encouraged to do the same through the "Target Presents PEOPLE All-Star Teacher" campaign, which celebrates remarkable current and retired teachers who make an impact on the lives of their students and communities. Nominees will have the chance to represent their favorite team and be honored during the pregame ceremony of the 2014 MLB All-Star game on July 15.
