AFL stint over for Reed due to soreness

Prospect made his Major League debut with Brewers in September

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers cut short outfielder Michael Reed's Arizona Fall League stint because of right hamstring and knee soreness, ending what was a breakthrough season for the 22-year-old.

A club spokesperson said the move was precautionary. Reed, No. 17 on MLBPipeline.com's list of the top Brewers prospects, had originally been scheduled to take part in Saturday's Fall Stars Game, an annual showcase of the prospect-rich AFL's top talent.

Three other Brewers farmhands -- pitchers Jacob Barnes and Damien Magnifico and infielder Yadiel Rivera -- remain on the roster for the West Division in that game, which starts at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on MLB Network and streamed live on MLB.com

Reed, the son of a former NFL defensive end, ended the 2014 season at Class A Advanced Brevard County but shot all the way to the Major Leagues in 2015. Reed posted a .781 OPS between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Colorado Springs, and he went 2-for-6 while appearing in seven September games for the Brewers.

In 11 games in the AFL, Reed batted just .211, but he led the Surprise Saguaros with 11 walks and posted a .388 on-base percentage. He last played on Oct. 30.

Reed is one of six outfielders on Milwaukee's current 40-man roster. He turns 23 on Nov. 18.

Other highlights from Brewers in the Fall League:

• As of Friday afternoon, Brewers prospects owned the Saguaros' second-, third- and fourth-best batting averages. Infielder Nate Orf was hitting .464 with a 1.114 OPS in seven games, Rivera was hitting .372 with a 1.018 OPS in 12 games and outfielder Brett Phillips was hitting .346 with a .990 OPS in seven games.

• Among qualifiers for the league's batting title, Rivera's batting average ranked sixth. He's also on Milwaukee's 40-man roster.

• So is right-hander Adrian Houser, who entered Friday tied for 10th in the league with 12 strikeouts. He's 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA in five starts, including five scoreless innings on Thursday that did not include a strikeout.

• Left-hander Josh Hader, acquired with Houser and Phillips from the Astros in the Carlos Gomez trade, allowed one run in his first four relief appearances in the AFL, spanning seven innings. Barnes did not allow any runs in his first six relief appearances, spanning 7 2/3 innings. Both Barnes and Hader struck out 11.

• Magnifico allowed one earned run in his first 5 1/3 innings spanning six games, logging a pair of saves. The Brewers will have to add him to the 40-man roster this month or risk losing him in December's Rule 5 Draft.
