Moustakas' mom on his mind at All-Star Game
Royals All-Star recently took emergency leave to be with ailing mother
CINCINNATI -- The Royals' All-Stars were calling it "Royals Row" -- all six Royals All-Stars present were lined up at tables along a side wall for their Monday media sessions at the Westin Hotel.
"How cool is this?" asked third baseman Mike Moustakas.
Of course, it is especially meaningful for Moustakas, who just returned to the Royals last weekend after being gone for a few days due to a medical emergency. His ailing mother, Connie, told him to return to the Royals last Friday, which he did. And his father, Mike Sr., is in attendance here at the All-Star Game.

"There was some thought about me not coming, but mom is doing pretty good right now," Moustakas said. "She's doing a lot better than she was. To have her doing better and to have my dad being able to come out here, it's good. If she wasn't doing better, I don't know if I would have come. I wanted to spend as much time with her as I could. But she's a fighter and she told me to get back to work."
Moustakas' family even thought there would be some emotional benefit for Connie to know her son would make it to the All-Star Game.
"Absolutely," he said. "Seeing her only son be an All-Star makes her smile."
Moustakas, who was the American League's Final Vote winner, is one of seven Royals to make the All-Star team, though outfielder Alex Gordon, out for two months because of a groin strain, decided against making the trip here.
"I can't say I ever thought I'd be an All-Star," Moustakas said. "It's hard to even put it into perspective."
