Minors Matters: Garcia, Martinez win June honors

ANAHEIM -- The Cardinals have recognized outfielder Anthony Garcia (Class A Advanced Palm Beach) and right-hander Carlos Martinez (Triple-A Memphis) as the organization's respective Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June.

Garcia hit .385 with seven homers and 14 RBIs in 17 games last month. On Monday, he was named the Florida State League's Player of the Week for the second time in June. During the weeklong stretch from June 24-30, Garcia had seven extra-base hits, four RBIs and eight runs scored.

Martinez returned to Memphis after a stint in the Cardinals' bullpen and went 2-2 with 2.20 ERA in six starts last month. He struck out 30 in 32 2/3 innings.

A few other notes from around the Cardinals' farm system:

• First baseman Brock Peterson and right-hander Michael Wacha have been named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, which will face the International League squad on July 17. Peterson, who has hit a PCL-high 19 home runs, will be in the starting lineup. Wacha will have the chance to pitch in relief.

• Tyler Lyons pitched seven shutout innings for Triple-A Memphis on Monday. The left-hander has not allowed a run in 14 innings since being sent down from St. Louis. In those two starts, Lyons has given up three hits, walked two and struck out 13.

• After a 13-day layoff that was scheduled to conserve his workload, Wacha returned to the mound for Memphis on Tuesday. Wacha pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out nine.
