CHICAGO -- Nate Schierholtz has set career high in home runs, and it's not even July. The Cubs outfielder leads the team in batting with runners in scoring position, which is one of the reasons manager Dale Sveum moved him to the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
Of all the Cubs' position players, Schierholtz, who was batting .289 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs entering play Sunday, may be the best bet to represent the team in the July 16 All-Star Game.
"I signed here because I knew I'd have a chance to play here more than I have in the past," Schierholtz said. "My goal is to go out and help the team win and get on base and drive in runs. That's something I'll continue to work on. I'm just happy that I've been given this opportunity."
There's still time to vote for Schierholtz, but he'll need a surge of support. No Cubs players were in the top five at any position in the latest balloting results, released Sunday.
A Cubs pitcher who could get picked for the All-Star Game is Travis Wood, who has posted quality starts in 13 of his 14 outings. Fans do not vote for the pitchers.
"We'll see what happens," Wood said. "It'd be awesome. That's what every player tries to play for. I'll just see what happens, and if it happens, it'd be great, and if not, I'll stay here and get my work in."
Wood has no travel plans for the All-Star break, and wouldn't mind another trip to New York.
"If you had to say one guy [who deserves an All-Star berth], because of the consistency, it would have to be Travis Wood," Sveum said.
Other Cubs on the NL ballot include two-time All-Star Starlin Castro, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Darwin Barney, third baseman Luis Valbuena, catcher Welington Castillo, and outfielders Alfonso Soriano and David DeJesus. Soriano, 37, is a seven-time All-Star, while this is the first time Rizzo, Valbuena, Castillo and Schierholtz have been on the ballot.
Wood is among the NL ERA leaders but hasn't had the wins to show for his production.
"That's a reflection on a lot of things -- run support, the bullpen may be giving up your runs," Sveum said. "[What's happening] here for the most part is our run production hasn't been very good for these guys to take off and win as many games."
