Reliever Carpenter becomes free agent

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals outrighted right-hander David Carpenter to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, but he elected free agency instead.

Carpenter was acquired from the Yankees in June for infielder Tony Renda. It looked like the Nationals had found their eighth-inning setup guy, but he hurt his shoulder before the All-Star break and never returned to action.

Carpenter pitched six innings for Washington and allowed a run in eight games.
